Wal-Mart In; Amazon Out
Posted May 4, 2011 by That Teowonna!
Just announced. Gov. Nikki Haley just announced that Wal-Mart is bringing 4000 new jobs to the state over the next five years. Good news, right? Good news indeed. But I have a concern or two.
Am I the only one who finds this announcement rather curious? Just last week, they ran Amazon off over some internet sales tax issue. In case you are unaware, Wal-Mart and other big box retailers headed up the charge against Amazon!
And a week later, Wal-Mart has committed to bringing more jobs to the state. Question. Why couldn’t South Carolina get the Amazon jobs AND the 4000 Wal-Mart jobs? Were the new Wal-Mart jobs dependant upon the Amazon deal going sour? I mean really. This does not sound good at all!
Was the pushing out of Amazon really about fairness? Or was it about competition? And how did Wal-Mart and small business owners find themselves on the same side of the issue, especially when Wal-Mart is the #1 small business killer. Come on people! Something about this doesn’t smell right!
Haley said no sales tax breaks were offered to Wal-Mart. I guess not, when you took care of their biggest competitor for them. That’s all the breaks they needed!
The citizens of SC are being played like pawns. While Wal-Mart adds to it bottom line and Gov. Haley plays politics, people like me and you can barely buy gas and keep the lights on. This ain’t cool, people. This ain’t cool!

Man I cant wait for those jobs to come in I need that $8.50 per hr .sweet
…it may seem that amazon.com has bigger fish to fry…

“Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos has contributed to a $19.5 million round of funding for Canadian nuclear fusion startup General Fusion, marking the web billionaire’s first major investment in nuclear energy.
Bezos is backing the British Columbia-based nuclear power developer via his personal investment firm Bezos Expeditions, according to General Fusion’s announcement. Neither company has disclosed how much of that $19.5 million came from Bezos. Other investors in the Series B round include Cenovus Energy and Braemar Energy Ventures.”
Nuclear? …interesting…
…i hope our state is happy with that workforce of 4000 extra folks extracting value from our already-challenged citizens…
With a econony that still hasn’t recovered from the biggest deficit in the history of the USA that was left from the previous President’s reign, I find it hard to fanthom that SC a state that has made a practice of giving excessive tax incentives to attract corporations (remembe MACK trust and countless others) would suddenly decide that the proposed tax dollars outweighted the needed jobs. Just how much did Wal-Mart donate to Haley’s campaign and lobbyists to fight this?
One can only guess.
Wow! That’s bonkers. And we are the state that sent them away to another state.
